The Backseat Drivers
In 1967, a ladies auxiliary of the Horseless Carriagemen was formed. It came to be named the "Backseat Drivers" by Harry McKew. The first meeting was held at the home of Mary Lytle.
The purpose of The backseat Drivers is to assist and support the Oshawa Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, The Horseless Carriagemen, financially and physically; also to support the Chapter's service projects and objectives. While fulfilling this purpose, warm friendships have been cultivated within the Auxiliary. The ladies meet once a month to discuss the business of the Auxiliary and to participate in a time of fellowship. Throughout the years, fellowship time has consisted of silent auctions, guest speakers, card games and innovative, fun programs produced by Auxiliary members. The fellowship of "The Secret Sisters" was a special kinship that was carried out within the auxiliary for more than twenty years.
Fundraising initiatives have allowed The Horseless Carriagemen to purchase needed items such as a tape recorder, uniforms, and riser skirts. The Backseat Drivers assist The Horseless Carriagemen with their annual show by preparing the pre-show mailing and helping out on the day of the show.
In the beginning, The Auxiliary met in members' homes, but presently meets at Trinity United Church in Bowmanville. The meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month from September through June.
